Playlist 003: Anyway

The Self-Isolation/Quarantine days roll on.

Lately, I’ve found so much joy and comfort in virtual hangs with friends. The primary ways I experience love are through physical touch and quality time—so since being physically together isn’t possible right now, spending time with people (even if we’re jut doing our own things in the same room) has proven very beneficial for my mental and emotional health.

During the latest call with my friend Joey, we chatted about the importance of sitting with your feelings and not simply trying to get rid of them.

For Joey this week, that meant watching heart-wrenching movies to fully experience the sadness in his own heart; for you, it might mean going for a run to be alone with your thoughts or reading a good book. For me, it means turning to music; finding peace in the knowledge that I’m not the first person to feel this way and I won’t be the last.

I titled this playlist Anyway—not because we’re ignoring the way this time makes us feel, but because we’re noticing it and choosing to push forward in spite of how sadness might want to drag us down. Capturing those feelings and the subsequent realizations in this playlist was a therapeutic process for me, and I hope that listening has a similar effect on you.

Let’s use the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Leon Bridges, Carpenters, HAIM and others to explore the journey of heartache, changes, and long nights filled with deep memories to sit with our feelings, and come out better on the other side.
